Multi Mark Magnetic Drywall Locator 8115 for Contractors
Perfect Drywall Cutouts With No Measuring
The Multi Mark Magnetic Drywall Locator 8115 uses multiple powerful magnets to simultaneously detect and mark a row of drywall screws — giving the user the full fastener pattern across the stud face in a single pass. At The Contractors Site, we supply the Multi Mark for Ontario drywall contractors, renovators, and finish tradespeople who need to locate stud fastener rows quickly and accurately on finished wall surfaces.
Ideal for first-time DIYs or the experienced handyperson, the Multi Mark electrical outlet locator uses powerful rare-earth magnets to help you accurately locate and cut electrical outlet access holes in drywall, sheetrock, panelling and other materials with no measuring required. Eliminates costly measuring errors, keeps wasted drywall sheets out of landfills and improves your productivity.
With the patented Multi Mark's versatile multi-shape Locator you can find, then trace the exact outline of practically any hidden electrical box - standard rectangle, or octagonal or round - for perfect cuts every time. Includes two targets so you can easily find two metal, plastic or composite boxes at once, saving time.
Other drywall locator methods require you to lift and lower heavy drywall sheets multiple times to mark, cut, then install. With the Multi Mark, you simply put it up once, cut the hole and you're done.
Confirm the Stud Location with Multiple Data Points
A single screw detection confirms a fastener location. Multiple screws in a vertical line confirm a stud — the alignment of multiple fasteners confirms both the stud position and the stud's vertical centreline. The Multi Mark's multi-point detection gives you that confirmation immediately, reducing the uncertainty that comes from interpreting a single-point result.
Works on drywall, plywood, particle board, laminated flooring, Masonite, exterior siding, cement board, tile backsplashes, slate and more.

Accuracy Guide: Where the Multi Mark Works — and Where to Watch Out
Where It Reliably Works
The Multi Mark is a passive magnetic locator — it detects ferrous metal fasteners (drywall screws, nails) already embedded in the wall. It performs best when:
- Drywall was installed with standard steel screws at normal 12" or 16" spacing
- Wall surfaces are standard thickness drywall (1/2" or 5/8")
- You need to locate outlet box positions before cutting — the Target Magnets adhere to the outlet box cover through the new drywall sheet
- You're working on wood-framed residential or light-commercial construction
- Wall surfaces are drywall, plywood, particle board, Masonite, cement board, tile backsplash, or exterior siding
The multi-point detection pattern — several fastener hits in a vertical line — gives you a strong, corroborated stud location rather than a single ambiguous data point.
Potential Sources of False Positives
Like all magnetic locators, the Multi Mark responds to any ferrous metal in range — not just drywall screws. Be aware of these conditions:
- Rebar or metal lath: Concrete block or older plaster walls may contain continuous metal mesh or rebar. The magnet will attract strongly but the hits will not follow a discrete screw-pattern grid — treat irregular, continuous attraction as a signal to investigate further before cutting.
- Electrical conduit or metal boxes: Steel electrical boxes and metal conduit will attract the Locator Magnet. In this case that's often the intent (outlet location) — but be aware the attraction is to the box itself, not to a framing member.
- Metal bridging or fire blocking: Horizontal steel bridging between studs can cause a horizontal band of attraction that doesn't correspond to a vertical stud line.
- Foil-faced insulation or vapour barriers: These do not trigger magnetic detection, but very dense or double-layered wall assemblies reduce effective detection depth.
The key diagnostic: genuine stud fasteners form a consistent vertical column. Erratic or horizontal attraction patterns usually indicate other metal — not a stud centre.
Calibration and Technique Tips
The Multi Mark requires no batteries or electronic calibration — but technique still matters:
- Slow, flat sweeps: Keep the Locator Magnet flush against the wall surface and move slowly. Lifting it away from the surface reduces sensitivity. The magnet snaps toward a fastener when directly above it.
- Mark multiple hits: Make a pencil mark at each snap-point. Three or more marks in a vertical line confirm a stud centreline. Two marks can be enough, but verify with a third if possible.
- Vary wall density: On thicker wall assemblies (double drywall, tile over cement board), detection depth may be reduced. If snap-points are weak or inconsistent, try sweeping more slowly or applying light pressure to the magnet.
- Use the multi-point detection advantage: The full-row fastener pattern gives you the stud's vertical centreline immediately — use all the detection points, not just the first hit, before committing a cut line.
Magnetic vs. Electronic Stud Finders: Choosing the Right Tool
The Multi Mark and electronic stud finders solve overlapping but distinct problems. Here's an honest comparison:
- Multi Mark magnetic locator ($34): Detects metal fasteners through the wall — fast, passive, no calibration, no batteries. Best for drywall screw and outlet box location in standard residential and light-commercial framing. Does not detect wood, plastic studs, or framing members without metal fasteners. Will not find studs in metal-stud construction unless screws are present.
- Electronic stud finders: Use density sensing (capacitance) or AC signal detection to find framing members and live wires. Better for locating the full stud edge-to-edge, or for walls where fasteners are sparse or non-ferrous. Require calibration against the wall surface and are sensitive to surface texture, moisture, and battery condition — all variables that introduce their own false-positive risk on job sites.
For most drywall installation tasks — particularly outlet box location and confirming stud row positions before hanging heavy loads — the Multi Mark's passive magnetic method is faster, more repeatable, and less prone to calibration error than capacitance-based electronic finders. For structural work or unfamiliar wall assemblies, use both methods and cross-verify before cutting.
